For May 24th, we tested how many foreign words Bulgarians use without realizing it

On the occasion of May 24th, the Day of Bulgarian Education, Culture, and Slavonic Literacy, we had the idea to show people how many loanwords they use in their everyday lives without even realizing it.

We wanted to create something valuable, relevant, and interactive. The topic of excessive use of foreign words isn't new, but it's rarely discussed with humor and self-irony. And that's exactly what we used.

How does it work?

The game presents you with a series of loanwords that almost all of us encounter daily. For each loanword, you need to choose a word that serves as its Bulgarian alternative, with each one having 3 suitable Bulgarian options.

At the end, you get your own character that reflects your language profile. Each one has its own identity and 3D visual.

The Five Archetypes

The results in the game are divided into five profiles. Each describes a different degree of "mastery" over loanwords:

🎓 Professor of Bulgarian Philology – Loanwords can hardly fool you. You find the most accurate Bulgarian word almost instinctively and use it with ease.

📚 Guardian of Bulgarian Literary Language – Loanwords rarely find a place in your vocabulary. People like you keep our language alive.

🧭 Language Nomad – Sometimes you prefer loanwords, sometimes you find the perfect Bulgarian word. You're right in the middle and feel comfortable there.

💬 Sense Maker – Your vocabulary already sounds like a mix of Bulgarian and office chat. There's still a chance to turn back, but for now "let's sync up" seems easier.

💼 Corporate Buzzword Master – Updates, events, and calls. You speak two languages at once, and neither of them is pure. But everyone in the office understands you.

What did the results show?

The average score was 4.5 out of 10 points, and the average completion time was 2 minutes and 7 seconds. Fast, engaging, and fun.

Only 1.7% reached the "Professor of Bulgarian Philology" level. Over 64% of participants fell into the "Language Nomad" and "Sense Maker" categories — exactly where most of us live.

The device breakdown confirmed what we expected: 90.5% of completions were from mobile devices.
